"Hiding Places: Memory in the Arts" at the Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI

June 26 - December, 2011
Artists include: Gregory Blackstock (WA), Gavin Christie (MI), Leona Christie (NY), Mark Fox (NY), William Powhida (NY), Doris Salcedo (Columbia), Ellen Gallagher (NY/Netherlands), Leon Golub (1922-2004), Richard Misrarch (CA), Ulrike Palmbach (CA), Roger Shimomura (KS), Akio Takamori (WA), and Anna Von Mertens (NH), among others.
Hiding Places" at the Kohler will present the ongoing collaborative project between sibings, Leona and Gavin Christie. Gavin, who is an autistic savant, types and handwrites daily lists which serve to record his photographic memories of dates, directions, closed stores, earlier book editions, tv guide listings from the 80's, and defunct brands of snacks and cereals, among other compendia. Leona has transformed a series of 20 of the typed lists into debossed prints, turning an ephemeral practice into a preserved archive. Included in the show will be a selection of Gavin's recent hand-written work, in which he is remembering his earlier memories. This new self-reflective practice is informed by the experience of publicly showing his work for the first time in "Courier," curated by Corinna Schaming at the University Art Museum in Albany, New York (October-December 2010).
Fully illustrated catalog, including essays by Erika Doss, Chair, Department of American Studies at Notre Dame University, and author of Memorial Mania and currently on the editorial board of the journal Memory Studies; and Darold A. Treffert, a psychiatrist specializing in Savant Syndrome for over forty years, consultant on the film Rain Man and author of Islands of Genius: The Bountiful Mind of the Autistic, Acquired and Sudden Savant.

"COURIER," October 5 - December 4, 2010

• Courier, University Art Museum, Albany, New York,
October 5 -December 4, 2010
Courier brings together a range of contemporary artists who have created works that are rooted in the physical, communicative, or iconic properties of the typewriter. From emblematic homage to pointed social critique, the works selected for this exhibition demonstrate that despite its obsolete status, the typewriter remains a potent carrier of untapped ideas.
Artists include Leona Christie/Gavin Christie, Daniela Comani, Lee Etheredge IV, Ann Hamilton, William Kentridge, Matt Liddle, Elena del Rivero, Allyson Strafella, Ignacio Uriarte, and Xu Bing.
Courier is documented by a 60-page, fully illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by James Siena.

• "Secret Drawings" / Palo Alto Art Center, California /
June 19 - September 5, 2010
Preview Reception, June 18, 7-9 p.m.
SECRET DRAWINGS
Inspired by the Exquisite Corpse, a Surrealist strategy to create unexpected, collaborative artworks, the exhibition SECRET DRAWINGS features artworks created by invited artists for the presentation. Each artist has been issued a sheet of paper with marks to connect their work to that of a secret collaborator. The secret collaborators have been assigned a title as a springboard for creativity, which may connect their work, or may reference artworks by Surrealists. The resulting pieces are installed as pairs for the very first time in the exhibition.
Other artists in the show include Kathy Aoki, Sandow Birk, Philip Knoll, Maria Porges, Walter Robinson, Anthony Discenza, Jennifer Starkweather, among many other interesting Bay Area artists.
